    The US Army Model 1840 Cavalry Saber Sword was designed for slashing and was nicknamed "Old Wristbreaker." The M1840 Cavalry saber was used during the U.S.-Mexican War as well as the Civil War by both the Union and Confederate cavalry. Union General George B McClellan carried one at the frontlines , keeping his regulation officer's sword for full dress occasions. Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest sharpened both edges of his sword increase combat effectiveness.
